About XL Weather & Energy

XL Weather & Energy (XLWE) is the weather and contingent risk arm of XL Capital group of companies. The company is based in Stamford, Connecticut and also has offices in London, Overland Park, Kansas and Hamilton, Bermuda.

The company was formed in July 2000 to write weather protection to corporate and government hedgers around the world as well as trade weather derivatives in the secondary market. To achieve this goal, XLWE – through its affiliates – has a strongly-rated, flexible platform that can deliver weather products globally in either (re)insurance or derivative form.

XLWE initially focused on growing its weather business and the market in general and made an immediate impact through the completion of several marquee customer deals. In the secondary market, XLWE was recognized as a key participant from the outset, being named as a top dealer every year by the leading industry trade magazines.

In Summer 2003, XLWE added its first contingent risk product – Unit Generation Outage Insurance – designed to hedge the cost of replacement power for electrical generators. Based on its success, XLWE plans to continue introducing new contingent products that further address energy industry needs.
